Research and Analytics Manager
General Position Summary:
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is the national trade association that represents the wind industry and promotes wind power through advocacy, communication, and education. The Manager of Research & Analytics supports the Association's analytic agenda through federal and state policy research, electric sector analysis, data collection and management, economic impact analysis, and market modeling.
This position will use broad research methods, data analysis technologies, member contacts, and smart database management to collect, maintain, and analyze industry statistical information. The position will inform strategic planning and drive member value through development of tools, data models, and dashboards as well as support the team in maintaining a fluent awareness of market trends and commercial activities. The role will use quantitative methods to evaluate the impact of potential and existing policies on the industry. Finally, the position will represent the clean power industry before policy makers, industry stakeholders, members and the media and coordinate member input into the development of policy positions.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
This position will lead association and industry efforts on issues requiring extensive data analysis and technical competence. The incumbent must have the ability to develop industry consensus and meaningfully guide the policy direction for the wind industry around these issues. The position will lead staff work for related association committees and/or subcommittees and will serve as a resource for members by tracking policy developments and subsequent industry impacts.
Data Management and Quantitative Analysis:
* Leverage data analysis technologies and data science techniques to collect, organize, store, and analyze data and information.
* Develop, maintain, and enhance database systems, processes, and reporting interfaces. Support the ongoing development of association databases.
* Build tools, data models, and dashboards to support strategic decision-making and drive member value.
* Support electricity market modeling efforts. Build and leverage quantitative models to evaluate the impact of policies and regulations on wind deployment and operation.
* Conduct market trend analyses and identify new sources of data collection that will inform and support association decision-making.
* Manage consultants and resources to accomplish the goals of the strategy and analytic agendas.
* Manage the association's collection of solar market data and information and associated analytics.
Policy Analysis, Expertise, and Advocacy
* Support the association's analytical agenda through federal and state policy research, market analysis, and advocacy.
* Evaluate the impact of potential and existing policies on the industry through research, analysis, member communication, and external stakeholder communication.
* Communicate clean energy industry trends to audiences including members, media, and the public.
* Engage with association members and stakeholders to inform policy design and strategy.
* Represent the industry before members, policy makers, regulators, industry, and the media, serving as both a staff expert and as a public advocate for the industry.
* Leverage association data products and analysis to support public proceedings, legislative session, and other association actions to advance strategic objectives.
* Develop and deliver fact sheets, position papers, and blog posts on industry policy and market issues.
* Serve as an expert reviewer of material prepared by other internal departments such as public affairs, regulatory affairs, legislative affairs, and state affairs.
* Occasionally support conference and education events on program development, speakers, and strategy.
* Provide rapid response and analysis in response to inquiries from staff, association members, regional partners, the press, and outside stakeholders.
Market analysis and statistical information management:
* Support the population and maintenance of the association's industry asset database, tracking solar and storage project transactions, power purchase agreements, and other key data items.
* Provide technical and development support for the publication, distribution, and communication of market assessment reports.
* Use broad research methods to collect industry information from sources including the Energy Information Administration, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, state utility regulators, and member outreach.
Interpersonal Contacts:
* Internally, the position interacts with all departments.
* Externally, the position interacts with members, regional partners, external stakeholders, academic institutions, government agencies, and the media.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
* B.A. or B.S. degree required; a major in a quantitative field such as economics, engineering, statistics, or computer science preferred.
* Experience in policy, advocacy, or research and at least five years of industry experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Master's Degree preferred.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
* Strong quantitative analysis skills. Candidate will routinely work with large, complex datasets.
* Attention to detail and strong data management skills. The ideal candidate must enjoy collecting, curating, and working with large amounts of data.
* Strong understanding of the technical features of the electric industry. Awareness of the major political and regulatory issues and topics impacting the U.S. wind, solar, and storage industries a must.
* Strong written and oral communication, with the ability to tailor information to audiences of varying technical capabilities.
* Technical writing and editing skills.
* Ability to use spreadsheet and presentation software, including Excel and PowerPoint.
* Advanced analytical software skills including Tableau, SQL, R, Python, etc., a must.
* Ability to prioritize and complete a variety of tasks efficiently.
* Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
