Research Software Engineer / Senior Research Software Engineer

Office of Information Technology

The Research Software Engineer / Senior Research Software Engineer will work together with other members of our team and the Brown community to build out data products and services across the university's administrative, research, and teaching operations. These products and services enable data-driven decision making by senior administrators, enhance the university's research efforts, and improve learning outcomes for students. The Research Software Engineer / Senior Research Software Engineer is expected to be a motivated, agile learner who keeps up-to-date with emerging technologies across a wide range of fields such as machine learning, software development, data management, analysis, and visualization.

The Research Software Engineer / Senior Research Software Engineer is expected to quickly become comfortable with best practices in software engineering with a strong emphasis on reproducibility; this includes version control, testing, continuous integration, containerized applications and multiple programming languages for data science and visualization. All members of CCV are encouraged to take ownership of projects, mentoring of interns, and lead outreach activities to promote CCV.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate, as a minimum, should have the following background:
  • Grade 10: Bachelor's degree with strong computational emphasis such as Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field. 1-2 years of experience.
  • Grade 11 (Senior) Master's degree with strong computational emphasis such as Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field, plus 4 years of experience. (equivalent experience may be an acceptable substitute)
  • Experience with at least one of the following: Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Statistical Modeling or another area that demonstrates modern Machine Learning experience.
  • Experience with at least two programming languages such as Julia, Python, MATLAB, R, C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Rust, Swift
  • Experience with Git and in general with version control
  • Experience writing, packaging and/or deploying machine learning pipelines, scientific libraries, web applications, and/or databases
  • High professional standards with the ability to manage competing requirements in a diverse user population
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with strong analytical ability
  • Versatile, enthusiastic and eager to learn new skills
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment
Desirable Qualifications

Candidates with some or all of the following qualifications are highly preferred:
  • Knowledge of Linux/UNIX systems and shell scripting
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, containerization.
  • Experience with cloud computing software and services
  • Experience with scientific visualization in one or more science domains
  • Experience with databases
  • Experience with (or interest in learning) JavaScript front-end libraries/frameworks such as React, Ember, Vue or others
