The Adult Learning Advisor works primarily with non-traditional (adult, W2W, dual enrollment, online, etc.) to onboard, advise and retain W2W, AUG, and non-degree students within our Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) programs. This position will report to the Associate Provost for DCS via the Associate Director of Advising and Retention. Primary responsibilities include providing comprehensive, regular, and proactive academic and transitional support through developmentally appropriate advising that holistically supports the student in all aspects of their lives - academic, personal, and professional. The Adult Learning Advisor orients students their program and process at the Mount and works with students on course selection and academic planning, majors, and careers, academic progress, and University policies and procedures. The Adult Learning Advisor also assists with the delivery of activities and programs for students that promote success and enhance retention and graduation of DCS students. The job is located at the Frederick Campus in Frederick MD.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with adult students in an advisory capacity.
  • Knowledgeable about best-practices in college transition/retention and approaches to effectively support the needs of working adult and online students (including social and emotional support in a virtual setting).
  • Onboard students for the W2W program and serve as their advisor of record.
    • Pre-screen W2W applicants' academic transcripts for eligibility for the W2W program.
    • Evaluate transcripts and create degree plans for W2W students.
    • Provide academic registration support.
    • Provide requested documentation to the VAAA, including student grades, attendance records, and transcripts.
    • Coordinate with the Bolte School regarding internships for W2W students and select, support, and provide evaluations to W2W faculty.
  • Serve as School Certifying Official (SCO) for DCS students, coordinating with Veterans Affairs, and participate in required annual SCO training.
  • Monitor the progress of students and ensure appropriate follow-up action regarding matters including, but not limited to, attendance verification, mid-term grades, and registration.
  • As needed aid in onboarding, advising, and graduation audits for Accelerated Undergraduate and non-degree students housed in DCS.
  • Establish effective partnerships and work collaboratively with campus colleagues to support student success and retention initiatives.
  • Motivate students to take ownership of their own academic success and help students to identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success.

Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of work experience in an educational setting supporting and advising students.
  • Experience working to recruit and retain veteran and military connected students.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office and student record systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; group presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying academic policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team in leading and implementing initiatives.
