OVERVIEW
The Project Relay Engineer provides substation and transmission line project oversight for the design, scheduling, and construction. The Engineer will assist in the installation, maintenance, testing, calculation, and troubleshooting of relays and controls.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Director of Substation/Transmission Engineering & Technical Services with the engineering design of facilities and oversight of construction required to meet the needs of the Cooperative for future orderly system growth and any additions or modifications to existing Cooperative electrical delivery systems
- Assist the Director of Substation/Transmission Engineering & Technical Services in setting and carrying out the overall goals and objectives of the department and the Cooperative
- Assure the orderly construction management of the Cooperative's substation and transmission facilities, including the procurement of substation sites and transmission easements
- Calculate and determine substation and transmission protection coordination
- Install, test, operate, and maintain the substation and transmission protective relays and controls in substations of the Cooperative so as to provide adequate and reliable service at the lowest possible cost to the customers of the Cooperative in a safe and efficient manner
- Assist in the relay protection and coordination schemes and settings for substation and transmission system
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
A four‐year engineering degree or equivalent required. An Engineer‐In‐Training Certificate (EIT) desired.
Must have experience in a power related engineering field. Knowledge of the operation of utility power systems, substation and transmission protective relaying design, relay testing, and protective coordination is desired. Experience in substation and transmission operations, construction, and project management is preferred.
General knowledge of the operations of a rural electric distribution cooperative is a plus. Must have knowledge of electricity. Knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code and National Electrical Code is a plus. Must demonstrate familiarity with project management.
Ability to communicate with members, general public, contractors, vendors, and employees. Ability to read construction plans as well as make design recommendations concerning the addition and upgrading of facilities to the cooperative’s electric plant.
Must be able to operate computers.
Must be willing to learn protective relaying and coordination. Ability to analyze problems and suggest solutions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Must travel to various locations throughout the system to complete many work assignments.
Most work will be done at the Fredericksburg office with some at district offices or in the field under any weather conditions. Occasional travel for training will be required.
In cases of outages or emergencies, work availability may be 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
