SUMMARY: The Head Lifeguard will monitor and supervises aquatic activities and ensure that all individuals taking part in these activities adhere to the rules to prevent injuries and other accidents. They will also respond to any emergencies in a timely manner. The Head Life Guard will supervise, trains, and schedules entry level lifeguards in every aspect of the job. Responsibilities include but are not limited to enforcing policies and procedures which ensure the efficient and effective operation of pool facilities including personnel training. Duties involve pool operations, including first aid, assisting the Parks & Recreation Director with scheduling for staff and public relations, janitorial duties, limited pool maintenance, daily chemical analysis/testing, pool cleaning, cleaning of bathrooms and lobby, swim lessons, water aerobics, and other duties as necessary or required. This employee should have excellent organizational, communication, and public relations skills. This position has variable hours and will require weekend and night shifts
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Enforces all facility policies, rules and regulations.
Coordinates orientation for new lifeguards.
Supervises, schedules and evaluates (with supervisor) performance of lifeguard staff.
Assists or leads in-services and lifeguard training courses as appropriate.
Reviews all incident and accident reports with staff during in-services and maintains files.
Acts as a liaison between patrons and guards.
Maintains a fun, clean and safe environment for pool patrons.
Treat the pool with appropriate concentration of chemicals on a regular schedule
Monitor pool-related activities closely throughout shift and identify any safety issues.
Creates an ongoing schedule of open swims, swim lessons, community events and other activities.

Organize and oversee pool parties
Maintain a clean environment in and around the pool
Recognizes and responds effectively to all emergencies.
Inspects the facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to a supervisor.
Ability to count money and make change accurately.
Work closely with the Parks and Recreation Director to come up with solutions to any issues that may arise.
Willing and able to remain flexible regarding assigned duties and grow with the needs of the department.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: An Associate of Arts and one year related experience OR High School
Diploma or GED and three years related experience.
Must consistently demonstrate both thorough knowledge and the ability to apply lifeguarding surveillance and
rescue techniques Must be at least 18 years of age. Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge is required. Must demonstrate an understanding of facility characteristics, policies, procedures and rules. Must consistently demonstrate leadership qualities, good decision-making and good public relations skills.
Must be able to read, write and speak Standard English.
Must have a least one year of continuous lifeguarding experience and references for a leadership role.
Prefer candidates with significant knowledge and experience in pool management operations.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak
effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: The successful candidate must have a valid Washington
State Driver’s License and proof of insurance. Must successfully pass a WATCH background check. Must have a
TB test within 30 days of hire date.
Must maintain current certification in the following:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid (rev 2007)
American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
American Red Cross Head Lifeguard Training or Lifeguard Instructor Training
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand,
walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk or hear; and occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift up to 25 pounds and frequently lift up to 50 pounds. This position also requires close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 or more feet); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); depth perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to stand for a 90 minutes block of time on the pool deck. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds safely. Physical
exertion is required to manually move, lift, carry or push heave objects, as well as climbing in and out of the
swimming pool, and up and down ladders.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles,
vibration, and risk of electrical shock; and is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and must occasionally work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; and work in outdoor weather conditions. The noise level of this position is moderate, (i.e. business office with computers, and printers, light traffic) and includes the noise associated with running a vacuum cleaner and a carpet shampooer. Working with chemicals is a factor in the position.
