Executive Director and Associate Dean, Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science

St. John's University

The Maurice R. GSRM is home to all risk and insurance related activities at St. John's, including the Insurance Leader of the Year (ILOTY) annual event, the Ellen Thrower Center for Internship, Apprenticeship & Career Placement and numerous other industry and student focused events.

GSRM is unique within St. John's University in that it is the result of the merger in 2001 of the former long-standing, independent, College of Insurance with St. John's; a merger that preserved and maintained intact an industry-facing stewardship structure consisting of an independent, volunteer Board of Overseers (Board) comprised of senior executives drawn from top companies and firms in the global (re) insurance and risk management industry.

This position is responsible to the University and Board alike for stewarding the overall health, development, and success of GSRM. This position serves as the administrative leader of GSRM, coordinating closely with the academic chair of the GSRM department, and reporting to the Dean of the Peter J. Tobin College of Business. Given the fundraising and external relations responsibilities described below, this position works closely with St. John's Vice President for Advancement and University Relations.

The role's key responsibilities include:

  • Preserving and developing close, effective, and robust relationships with leading companies and firms in the (re) insurance and risk management sectors to achieve:

  • Maximum fund-raising and other forms of support from industry to undergird GSRM programs and benefit the University

  • Outstanding internship, apprenticeship, and early-career employment opportunities for GSRM students

  • Energetic and effective marshalling and guiding of a world-class Board comprised of leading industry executives

  • Leading and executing the Insurance Leader of the Year (ILOTY) benefit event - held annually in New York City and attended by 1,200+ individuals - such that it serves the industry and St. John's University alike by maintaining ILOTY's position as the most prominent annual national and international gathering of insurance industry executives who support the advancement of higher education

  • Fostering and strengthening the activities and initiatives of GSRM's own fully funded, student-centric, Ellen Thrower Center for Internship, Apprenticeship & Career Placement

  • Building a cohesive GSRM Alumni Community that supports GSRM through volunteer time, fundraising activities and service projects focused on GSRM students

  • Participating proactively and directly in the University's process of identifying and recruiting an outstanding GSRM Academic Faculty and Experiential-Education adjunct teaching cohort

  • Working directly with the University's Enrollment Management staff in the decision-making processes and programs that ensure and enhance a University Student Recruitment and Admissions Program that, over time, continues to grow and increase the quality of students matriculating into GSRM Programs

  • Working with the GSRM faculty to ensure that GSRM Executive Education programs are meeting the training needs of the broader insurance industry

  • Effectively managing the Davis Library to build on its status as the leading resource and collection for insurance documents and materials

  • Supporting faculty in the design and execution of GSRM academic for-credit courses that seek to expose GSRM students to top leadership and the most important management issues facing the global (re) insurance and risk management industry.
  • Ensuring efficient and effective utilization of GSRM's location at the University's Manhattan campus by faculty, staff, industry partners, and students and developing its use as a unique focal point for the (re) insurance and risk management companies and firms represented on the GSRM Board as well as others.

Required Education and Experience:

Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in academic management and programs; deep experience in the global (re) insurance and risk management industry; extensive relationships with executives throughout the industry; and effective requisite people and leadership skills to operate in both an academic and corporate board environment.
