Stafford County Attorney's Office is seeking a legal assistant, who possess knowledge of legal office practices and procedures, and various routine legal documents; strong grammar and writing skills; and excellent administrative and receptionist skills.
Prior legal and/or local government experience desired.
Performs difficult skilled clerical work transcribing and preparing legal documents and correspondence, providing general office support and in assisting the County or Commonwealth's Attorney with legal research and procedures; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the County or Commonwealth's Attorney.
Examples of Duties:
- Providing legal secretarial services; maintaining attorney and court calendars and dockets; serving as receptionist; preparing and maintaining legal files and records.
- Prepares legal documents such as court orders, motions, writs, indictments, pleadings, etc. from descriptions and/or drafts of information to be contained within the document;
- Coordinates witness interviews and summons;
- Maintains attorneys calendars for all upcoming criminal cases, trials and events;
- Types legal pleadings, deeds, leases, resolutions, ordinances and public notices;
- Prepares and inserts legal advertisements and notices;
- Performs basic legal research as required;
- Performs general secretarial duties;
- Maintains office files, orders and maintains office supplies;
- Performs related duties as directed.
Thorough knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques; thorough knowledge of legal terminology and spelling; thorough knowledge of departmental functions, organization and policies; general knowledge of the principles, methods and practices utilized in legal research; some knowledge of municipal law; ability to maintain involved office and legal records; ability to organize and perform work independently; ability to take and transcribe dictation at a minimum of 80 word per minute and type at a minimum of 60 word per minute; ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Typical Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in typing, administration and secretarial training and considerable experience as a legal secretary or assistant.
Notary Public license is desirable.
