Job Description Summary:
The Radiation Oncology Post doc will actively participate in an educational experience in Radiation Oncology Physics to promote acquisition of knowledge and skills in this specialty. The program's educational curriculum includes: In-depth knowledge of simulation, target and organ-at-risk motion management, design and fabrication of treatment aids, image fusion and registration, treatment planning, plan quality QA/QC, independent MU verification, treatment documentation, treatment plan approval, verification/QA plan generation, pretreatment - specific QA, image-guided treatment verification, weekly continuing medical physics consultation, total body irradiation, in vivo dosimetry, brachytherapy quality assurance, prostate seeds assay, HDR source exchange and calibration, ultrasound QA, brachytherapy treatment planning, radiation safety, shielding design, LINAC and CT acceptance and commissioning, special physics consultation, implanted electronic device radiation management, LINAC and CT's daily, monthly and annual QAs; The in class educational activity: didactic lectures, tumor conferences, weekly Chart Rounds Meeting, monthly physics conferences, and department specific educational conferences; Research activities. Examinations: In-Training and Oral Boards. In addition to department specific responsibilities, CAMPEP has outlined milestones for this level of training.

Education: PhD in physics, biological sciences or a related discipline.

Work Experience: 2 years of experience in Radiation Oncology related roles.

Job Duties Outlined:
  • Work with faculty mentors to design and prioritize research projects.
  • Post Doc will understand the principles of CT, MRI, Fluoroscopy, Angiography, Ultrasound, Nuclear medicine imaging, Combined modality imaging (PET/CT, SPECT/CT, etc.), Linear accelerator portal imaging, Linear accelerator kV imaging, Cone beam CT, 4D CT acquisition and handling, Gating, etc.
  • For CT-based virtual simulators, the Post Doc must obtain a level of knowledge that permits him/her to carry out an acceptance test protocol (ATP) and implement a quality assurance program on an appropriate schedule.
  • Post Doc will understand the use of major imaging modalities (CT, MR, PET, hybrid systems) in the treatment simulation process.
  • Post Doc will understand the derivation of the quantities used in the calculation of monitor units.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with mathematical routines for optimization of fluence patterns and Multi-leaf Collimators (MLCs).
  • Post Doc will be familiar with IMRT delivery mechanisms, including Sliding window MLC IMRT, Step and shoot MLC IMRT, Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT).
  • Post Doc will be familiar with optimization processes involved in inverse planning.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with IGRT platforms for intracranial and extra-cranial treatments.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with acceptance testing and commissioning of an IGRT system.
  • Post Doc will understand the appropriate application of IGRT techniques to individual cases.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with the physical aspects of HDR sources.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with brachytherapy dose calculations for HDR sources and understand the calculation algorithm used in the treatment planning software.
  • Post Doc should have appropriate knowledge of the state and federal regulations pertaining to the use of radioactive material or radiation producing devices in brachytherapy.
  • Post Doc is expected to know appropriate institutional, state, and federal regulations pertaining to the use, storage, and transport of radioactive materials, and patient and personnel safety relating to ionizing radiation.
  • Post Doc will understand the appropriate application of SRS/SRT/SBRT techniques to individual cases.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with MRI imaging for cranial SRS treatments and proper MRI-CT image registration Post Doc will be familiar with PET imaging, 4DCT, and other respiratory motion management techniques used in SBRT.
  • Post Doc will be familiar with radiopharmaceutical basics.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the faculty mentors.


Postdoc Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
