Position Summary and Primary Responsibilities:

This position resides with the School of Medicine Technology Services (SOMTech) team in the Application Services (AS) unit and manages 2 direct reports.

The Assistant Director will oversee the creation of architecture, ETL processes, and data collections for Snowflake on Microsoft Azure using school, university, and external data sources and information. This includes designing and delivering enterprise BI and analytics reports, solutions, and promoting the use of self-service analytics across the enterprise.

Key duties include:
  • Executes substantial technical efforts in data warehouse creation and management with an Enterprise focus.
  • Performs advanced project and analytical work in a wide range of business intelligence activities that ensure the uniformity, accuracy, and semantic consistency of enterprise data through the application of effective data management, security, stewardship, and governance processes.
  • Lead information gathering sessions with business stakeholders to understand current and desired business intelligence capabilities.
  • Translate requirements from stakeholders and work with the developers to source the data as needed, use a variety of tools and methods and to analyze and interpret the data, and finally assist in building out and maintaining dashboards and reports.
  • Recommend and develop workflows, analytic rules, data models, and deliver recommendations for business and analytic decisions.
  • Help aggregate and analyze data across disparate sources using a variety of tools and methods and derive intelligence that can be turned into actionable insights.
  • Assist in defining data governance policies, standards, and procedures. Contribute to the development of data strategy aligned with institutional goals.
  • Take the lead in promoting data literacy, data-driven culture, and best practices among stakeholders and BI teams across VCU and VCU Health.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business, Mathematics, or similar analytical field.
  • 10+ years of experience working in analytics, business intelligence, reporting, or similar data-related functions in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience leading and managing large and complex BI projects across multiple business functions.
  • Experience reviewing and streamlining business processes, including gathering and documenting requirements, developing and implementing new processes and procedures. Solid experience on Agile, Scrum, and SDLC methodologies.
  • Outstanding SQL data architecting/engineering (relational and dimensional data modeling) to lead planning and development of Business Intelligence Data Warehouse, as well as ability to quickly master existing data sets.
  • Demonstrated experience in data modeling, database design, data integration, transformation, and ETL techniques. Strong experience in Snowflake for data warehousing and analytics.
  • Extensive programming experience in Python for building data pipelines and automating data processes.
  • Extensive experience in developing, maintaining and managing Tableau driven dashboards & analytics and working knowledge of Tableau administration and architecture.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships with and effectively communicate complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with governance, data management, KPI development, and BI reporting management teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with staff development, mentoring, and oversight.
  • Prior working experience in higher education organizations.
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Hiring Standards:
  • Graduate degree in Information Systems, Data Analytics, Computer Science, and/or MBA candidates are preferred.
  • Experience with version control systems and CI/CD pipelines.
