The Department of Counseling and Special Education in the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant, associate, or full professor in the counselor education program who embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion and will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. The counselor education program includes master's programs in school counseling, college counseling and student affairs, and couples and family counseling. It also offers a Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in Counselor Education and Supervision. The counseling program provides graduate students with research-based professional studies and clinical experiences necessary for effective counseling, advocacy, and leadership in diverse geographic and socio-economic settings. The position's focus is contributing to the school counseling program.

The assistant/associate/full professor of counselor education is a 9-month position with the possibility of teaching during the summer, depending on departmental needs. Ideal candidates are committed to enhancing school counseling research; pursuing external funds; teaching excellence; contributing to program, department, school, and university governance; and serving and leading in the counseling profession. This faculty member will join a productive and collegial group of faculty members committed to cultivating a culturally diverse student body and faculty, and supporting diversity within the community.

The primary responsibilities of this position include (a) sustaining a record of research and scholarship, (b) teaching courses in the master's and doctoral-level courses in the counseling program, and (c) providing service and leadership to the program, department, university, and counseling profession.

Position Responsibilities

1. Research and Scholarship
●Engage in scholarly activities to advance the counseling field, focusing on school counseling, addressing diversity, inclusion, social justice, and equity in counseling.
●Establish and/or maintain a research agenda that has the potential for external funding.
●Collaborate with colleagues, students, and schools in research and scholarship.

2. Teaching
●Teach courses in the counseling programs based on departmental needs.
●Supervise school counseling students in practicum and internship courses.
●Advise students, including supporting Ph.D. students in their dissertation process.
●Assist with curriculum management and oversight.

3. Service
●Service to the community through participating in department, school, and university committees.
●Collaborate with community partners and the profession locally.
●Hold leadership positions nationally and internationally within the counseling profession.

Required Qualifications:
●An earned doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-Accredited program by the start of the position
●Experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
●Demonstrated effort to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
●An articulated school counselor educator identity
●Engagement and leadership in academia and the counseling profession
●Currently licensed and/or eligible to obtain Virginia licensure for school counseling
●Record of research and scholarship in school counseling commensurate with experience level
●Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications
●Secured external funding for research
●Experience working with doctoral students and serving on dissertation committees
●Experience in collaborating with local school systems and agencies
●Experience with leadership and governance in a counseling program
●Service in professional counseling organizations
